During a press conference held at the Oregon Lottery headquarters in Salem, Oregon, the spouses Cheng and Duanpen Saephan and their friend Laiza Chao were announced as the winners of the enormous lottery drawn earlier this month.

Cheng Saephan, an immigrant from Laos and a resident of Portland, explained how much his life had changed by winning the lottery amidst his eight-year battle with cancer.

“I am happy for my family, they will have a good life,” Saephan said during the press conference. “I am fighting cancer, so I am thinking about how I am going to spend all the money,” he said, adding that he can now find a “good doctor” and that he and his wife plan to buy a house with the lump sum won.

Saephan immigrated to the United States in 1994 and worked in the aerospace sector. He, his wife, and their friend, Laiza Chao, bought 20 Powerball tickets hoping to win the jackpot.

"I called Laiza while driving to work, I told her, you don’t have to go to work today, we won the lottery; we hit the jackpot!"

The astonishing Powerball ticket, valued at $1.326 billion, was the fourth largest Powerball in history and the eighth largest among prizes awarded in the United States, according to the Oregon Lottery.

On April 6, the lucky ticket that matched all six Powerball numbers was sold at the Plaid Pantry store in Portland, Oregon, the state lottery announced.

The numbers drawn for the winning prize were 22, 27, 44, 52, and 69, with a Powerball of 9, the lottery said.
